Cho And O

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

Congrats to Sean who won Atlanta’s Funniest Officer Worker at the Funny Farm Comedy Club last night. Dave FM held a contest the over the past few weeks for up and coming comedians. The best part of the evening was that Margret Cho stopped by to do a surprise set.  She is SOOOO hilarious and I’m thrilled to tell you she’s more than likely going to be our next Radio Free Takeover guest in July.  She lives in Atlanta part time filming the Lifetime series “Drop Dead Diva”.

Speaking of guests, if you care to hear my interview with Rich Robinson from the Black Crowes it’s here and my chat with HGTV’s Vern Yip is here.

Today I went to the open casting call for Oprah’s OWN network.  This was a chance for anyone to try out for their own show.  Of course I just had to give it a go—what the hell?  Elizabeth and I got there at 4:30 AM and it was packed.  It was organized chaos though.  They had us in and out by 9:30 and the whole operation was extremely impressive.  My audition was 30 (!!) seconds but I did the best I could.  There were so many talented people from from all over the country, it was just amazing. I was glad to be there for the fun of it.  We didn’t take photos (I was too worried about getting my place in line) but WSB TV has a few good ones here.  And if I don’t make the O show (seriously, there were so many people trying out for this) I may have a better chance of getting to NYC hang with Regis.  If you have a second, be a pal and nominate your favorite radio personality?

Have a good weekend!!

Backstage At Coco!!!

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

So–what did you think of the show?!  OK so this is a beyond an OMG!

Thanks to my friends the Saltzman’s (LOVE you guys) who gave us a big introduction to Turner Networks President Steve Koonin and his awesome wife Edie. He’s the guy who basically put the whole Conan deal together.  The best part was that someone had told Steve that yesterday’s lunch theme was “Very Funny” in honor of TBS and he loved it.  We were invited backstage after the show and I just couldn’t believe it.

First we saw Andy Richter who was so nice and easy to talk to.  We asked him what he was up to he said he was filming a pilot for the ,000 Pyramid.Great call and I’d totally watch that !!

Jack McBrayer from 30 Rock was one of the special guests during the show and he was backstage with his family (Jack’s from Conyers). They were waiting to meet Conan after us. He is so sweet, I just love him.

Then we met Conan—and it was surreal.  Mostly because we were with Mr. Koonin.  I was so nervous!! When introduced to Conan I was blabbering on “I met you before and now I’m here again and OMG I love you I’m so excited for the show on TBS!!” like a wild hyena.  Steve finally said “down girl”!! I’m not sure if this was funny or embarrassing (!?) but who cares—it was a moment.  I don’t have a picture of Conan because no one in the group was taking photos. Conan was swarmed with people and seemed exhausted on the last night of the tour.  Even through all of that he was SO NICE.  Like unbelievably nice and funny. He exceeds my expectations of being a comedy super hero.  And let’s face it, I had to play it as cool so we can keep Steve on Dave-FM’s good side (wink wink, see you in November!).  This was really a moment for the Koonin family and Conan.  I was beyond honored to be a part of it.

Finally on the way out we met LaBamba who was super sweet.  He was a big part of Conan’s show and was hilarious as usual. The band KICKED ASS….and he even sang a few numbers.

Also, the opener Reggie Watts was phenomenal as in next time he’s in town run don’t walk to see him.

What a night!!  I didn’t sleep at all but who cares.  I can’t wait for Conan’s show in November!  Thank you so much Andy, Amy, Edie and Steve.

Countdown To Conan And Other Stuff

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

I am sooo excited for the show tomorrow night I can barely sit still.  Of course it figures I came down with some sort of stomach flu this weekend.  It’s NASTY and thanks a lot Charlie for passing it on.  While I’ve been waiting for Coco’s show at the Fox, Elizabeth has been keeping me in the loop with some killer updates from Bonnaroo.  She texted me frantically last night because she ran into him backstage.  Love it!!

Read up on everything they’ve been up to here.  They have been doing a killer job covering the event!

While I was on the air Friday it was absolute torture because I was so f**cking sick.  I pulled it together to meet Cee Lo who was so nice.

Unfortunately I couldn’t bail on the interviews I had scheduled.  I spoke to Todd Glass about a new documentary called “I Am Comic”.  Aisha Tyler called in to promote her gig at the Funny Farm.  I also posted my interview with Bethenny Frankel from Real Housewives of NYC.  Did you watch Bethenny Getting Married?  I did and really, really liked it.  I still haven’t decided whether I like her or not but the show is totally cute.

While lying around on my sick bed this weekend I also had a chance to catch up on 90 Oprahs (I save them in my DVR for sick days, not even kidding), Bravo’s new “Next Great Artist (it’s good, not great but I’ll totally watch) and my new favorite reality show Jersey Couture.  These girls are hilarious and I love watching the operation of their family run dress shop.  It’s on Oxygen and you should definitely check it out.

Now I’m going to the Fox to see Nick Jr. story time with Charlie (or some sh*t not exactly sure).  I think I’m gonna see Jimmy Baron and his son Micah there.  Check out this great CNN piece on his “Dad’s Between Gigs” promotion here.  Too cool!!!

Summerfest And What’s Coming Up This Week

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

Summerfest has about worn me OUT but it was totally fun.  It was so great seeing everyone so thanks for coming out.  One of the highlights of the weekend was this interview with Bob Schnieder who headlined the festival.  Truth be told I didn’t know that much about his music so going in so it was a complete wild card.  He was super cool though.  See for yourself.

Next week is going to be busy!!  We have phone interviews scheduled with Biz Markie (to promote Yo Gabba Gabba in Atlanta), Bethanny from The Real Housewives and Belinda Carlisle.  Also on Friday Aisha Tyler (Ross’s girlfriend on Friends) will be in studio to promote her gig this weekend at the Funny Farm.

But wait, there’s more!  We’ll also have a chance for you to win Tom Petty tickets with a nights stay at the Glenn Hotel downtown.  Your mission?  Come up with the most creative Radio Free Lunch idea for this Thursday.  This all ties with launch of the new Creative Loafing Thursday.  Feel free to submit your ideas here!

Have a great week!!

Neil At The Fox

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

It was a sold out show at the Fox Saturday night.  He’s had some dicey experiences with Atlanta audiences in the past (Greendale at Chastain, with CSNY at Phillips).  This time it was totally different.

The Fox is the perfect venue for this type of mellow concert.  It was Neil, guitars, pianos and his amazing song writing. He played lots of hits (Ohio, Cinnamon Girl, After The Goldrush) and a bunch of new songs. Surprisingly, the new material was as good as the classics. Neil didn’t talk to the crowd much but when he did it was special. There was a song he sang for (I think) his granddaughter that was simply magnificent.  The crowd was awesome, you could hear a pin drop while he played. When he was finished songs they roared with applause. There are very few artists who can pull off a one man acoustic concert (Springsteen, Prince) and Neil is one of them.  Great show.

What did you think?

Spicy Chicken Sandwich From Chic Fil A

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

They brought some by for us to try today. It is really, really spicy.  Like in a good way.  I am holding out for a grilled version because the fried was bit a much for me.  I mean, it’s not KFC Double Down rich—but still pretty heavy.  Try it for yourself FREE between May 31 and June 5th by signing up here.

And PS this isn’t an advertisement…..We just love Chic Fil A and we eat it here at Colony Square all the time.  Has anyone else had a chance to try it?

Weekend Things

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

I started off Friday night at the Funny Farm for Atlanta’s Funniest Office Worker.  The crowd was pretty subdued for a night out at a comedy club (or I just bombed ;) ).  Anyone interested in entering the next round you can do it here, it’s on June 4th.

Saturday we hit the Renaissance Festival which was a riot.  We went with a few of Charlie’s friends and loved the freaks, turkey legs and how every activity costs . What’s up with that?  I especially loved the fashions at the event….

BTW this doesn’t even scratch the surface of the freak show people watching there.  It’s part of the reason it was so much fun.

Saturday night we went to a party at my agent’s house.  This thing is always a trip because there are so many random radio people there.  The best part was running into country radio legend Moby who I worked with several years ago.  He flat out didn’t recognize me after I said hello to him twice.  Finally he said “OHHHHH MAHRAH nice to see you!!” Uh huh.  Hilarious.

As I write this we are preparing to watch the LOST finale marathon.  I am so excited and am about to down a giant glass of iced coffee so I can stay up.  11:30 on a Sunday night is a totally rarity for me.

Hope you had a good weekend!!

In The Studio With Atlanta Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff

Friday, May 21st, 2010

I just can’t say enough about Thomas!!  He was so down to earth and truly loves music .  My favorite part was when New England Patriots Coach Bill Belichick called in.  It was awkwardly awesome.  You can hear the entire show on the Dave website here.

Monday’s RFL, Stand Songs

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

President Obama and Jay Leno tried their hand at stand up this weekend at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner.  In honor of this awkwardness, we’ll play “stand” songs. And after watching Conan on 60 Minutes I’m wondering why…….he didn’t he host the dinner??  He was hilarious!  Can’t wait to see him at the Fox in June.

Speaking of stand up, the ”Atlanta’s Funniest Person” contest is coming back soon!  If you or someone you know has always wanted to do stand up  you’ll soon have a chance. Dave-FM is hooking up with the Funny Farm Comedy Club for a chance to win BIG prizes.  Details soon!!
