An Honest Question For You.
If a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, did it really fall?
Nah, I joke.
Here is the real question. Now this isn’t one of those questions that is meant to cause a ruckus or to make anyone mad. The last thing I want to do is piss anyone off, but what I have to ask is…
Do we really need a speed limit really early in the morning?
The reason I ask is that since I’ve been working in radio, my hours basically revolve around, let’s give the median time of 3:30am, and the roads are usually D-E-A-D. Now this question only really pertains to the highways, not the back roads. Back roads need speed limits, no doubt about that.
Also, this isn’t a dig to state and local law enforcement who are on the highways and freeways either, I have a TON of respect for them and wanted to be one when I was younger.
Here’s the reasoning behind it. Nearly EVERY morning when I’m driving in, there are people just blasting by me going at least 85 mph. I’m not saying that I drive the limit, I’ve been known to go a little fast from time to time, but these people are FLYING! The kicker behind that is that the people going slower in the left lane or the middle lane cause the most problem driving at or a little above the limit. Should you speed? No. Can you speed responsibly and intelligently? I think you can.  Look at the Autobahn, there is no general speed limit, but the “recommended” speed limit is 81mph. AND…the accident and fatality rate on the Autobahn is lower than other highways in Europe. I’m not saying we need an autobahn here in the States, I’m just saying that MAYBE…and that’s a big maybe…we need to be a little more slack on the highways and freeways during the hours of 12-5am.
Again, this isn’t a post to piss everyone off or to get everyone riled up. Safe driving is still the most important way to drive and when you DO drive…that’s all you should be doing. No texting, no putting on make up, no reading the paper, no eating. Just drive. Let me know what you think, the more we talk about it, the more action and education we can derive.
Keep rockin’ and driving safe Atlanta, life is good.
