It Boggles the Mind!

Friday, September 26th, 2008

As a person whose job is to use his voice to entertain I find myself finding new ways to imitate and mimic people and sounds.  Not to the point of someone like Michael Winslow (Police Academy movies), but to sound fairly decent and get a laugh or two…or 1,000.

But as nature would have it, God did make something that can mimic pretty much anything.  I came upon this during my many hours surfing the web and watching pointless debauchery on YouTube.  It’s the Lyrebird and really, you HAVE to check this out.

Here’s all about the Lyrebird on Wikipedia.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyre_bird

If you want to see this amazing creature in action, check out this video from David Attenborough’s video from the BBC.

You will be amazed, I promise you.  Maybe I should go ahead and get a transplant, it’d explain why I scratch the ground…wait, what?

Keep rockin’ friends, life is good.

Dave After Tomorrow

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

Dave After Tomorrow returns! If you aren’t familiar, DAT was a show I did for a couple years on Thursday nights. I would explore various genres of music, musicians, and all sorts of music related things. For reasons I can’t get into, it went away about a year and a half ago. …However, it’s coming back. Yay!

Starting This Tuesday 9/23, at 8pm, and every Tuesday thereafter, tune in for Dave After Tomorrow!

I’ll post some upcoming DAT topics in the next couple days

Heads up

Monday, September 15th, 2008

I just wanted you to have a heads up that on April 24, 2009, Orff will probably be filling in for me. I’ll be getting married that day. …No, really!

I don’t normally post anything too currently personal on my blog but it’s big news so I wanted to share.

Remind me to never go on vacation

Monday, September 15th, 2008

Are you like me in that when you’re away from work all you think about is work? I’m like that. I’m a worrier - BIGTIME. And I really miss being on the air. I’m half tempted to just show up today and tell them I want to be back on.

Anyway. I am really loving this new Fearless Football Picks segment that Zakk and I are doing. All brought to you by the SportsZone at Applebee’s - with widescreen TVs, drink specials and the NFL Sunday Ticket from DirecTV by the way! We talk football every Tuesday morning at 8:45 and then pick our 5 games every Friday afternoon at 4:30. You can play along by getting to the Fearless Football Picks page at www.edave.com. And out of the gate in week one, Zakk and I each went 3 out of 5. And Zakk knows way more about football than I do so I am really going to be working hard to get ahead of him!!!

I have had a lot of time this week to listen to lots of music - old and new - and here are some highlights.

- The Attery Squash, an interesting electronic group from the UK. Check em out at www.myspace.com/theatterysquash. “If It’s Too Stupid” is a fun little song.

- Little Milton - late Bluesman from Mississippi - http://www.myspace.com/littlemilton16.
What a voice. Here’s a little more on Little Milton: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Milton

- Kuriaki - www.myspace.com/anderkuriaki - More electric. The song Hydrophonic has some great samples of Al Pacino in Devils Advocate, and you know that plays big with me.

OK, now you must think I am totally weird. And you’d be right!

See you Monday afternoon - it can’t come soon enough!!!

xoxo Sully

2 Seasons Down…2 More To Go!

Friday, September 12th, 2008

Well now…Spring is finished and Summer is almost finished so now we turn our attention on Fall.

Yes sirrie, Fall is on the way and nothing is better than it in Georgia.  I had an earlier blog where I talked about Summer songs and how the Fall always brings a different attitude with people and the music they listen to.

Honestly, how could you not love Fall?  Really, if you think about it, all the cool sports happens during the Fall.  College Football, hockey, baseball playoffs, football…not to mention the holidays.  Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas…almost, it just hits the cusp of Winter.

So sit back and relax because once September 22nd hits, it’s when the good times roll.  Enjoy the cooler weather, the sports, the leaves changing color, but MOSTLY enjoy the music that reminds you of the season.  The Zombies had it right, it is the season of loving.

If you still are a hater of the 3rd season, then just look at this picture and tell me you still don’t like it.

“Autumn is the eternal corrective. It is ripeness and color and a time of maturity;
but it is also breadth, and depth, and distance.  What man can stand with autumn
on a hilltop and fail to see the span of his world and the meaning of the rolling
hills that reach to the far horizon?
-   Hal Borland

The point I make to you here friends is to enjoy each day like it’s your last and take the world for what it is, an immense landscape of beauty that brings passion to your life and joy to your heart.

Keep smiling.  Orffy loves you.

Slack

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

What can I say? I’m slack. (Actually, the truth is I’ve been very busy, but everybody says that.)

I like what Craig Ferguson has to say about voting. Read the article from the link below and I’ll update this sooner rather than later. Deal? Good!

Football season is finally here

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Well it’s been a while, but here I am. Football season is finally here and I know that if you love
the game, you love this time of year!! Personally, I’m more of a buckets guy and can’t wait for late October when they start playing basketball again.

The Falcons are set to have - according to the experts - a pretty disappointing season. I will remain optimistic week-to-week and pull for them no matter what. I don’t care much for these experts anyway. They’re the same bunch that gave the University of Georgia no credit for being #1 in the country and omitted them from
their top 5. (Mel Kiper). But DJ Shockley made the team and all is right in the world. Go Dawgs. Go Falcons.

My relationship with Applebees is back up in full swing this year. I will be hitting various locations from time to time to watch some of the big games. You know I love the ‘Bees because they have great people working there, great, affordable food AND $2 Miller High Life 22oz drafts! LOVE THAT. Please enjoy responsibly. All the Applebees have the NFL Sunday Ticket from DirecTV so no matter which team you pull for, the game will be on at Applebees!!! Yes!!

It was sad to read about the passing of Don LaFontaine this morning. He’s one of the most recognized voices in the US but you may not have ever known his name. People often referred to him as “the movie announcer guy”
and I’m sure he didn’t mind. He had a limo driver taking him to and from his voice over gigs and was paid in the millions for doing what he loved to do. May you rest in peace, Don LaFontaine. 1940-2008. “In a world. One man.
One desire.”

That’s all I have. What’s up with you? Leave a comment or send email to sully@929dave.fm

And I have been lobbying the music dept at dave fm for an all Sinatra hour. I’ll keep you posted on that,
but in the mean time, check out some of the greatness that was/is the Chairman of the Board.
