All dressed up like The Cure

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

I heard the new Ben Folds early. Can’t wait for a copy because it’s really good! …And yes, he drops the f-bomb in it. Wouldn’t be a Ben Folds song without one.

Till I can play the new song for you, here’s Ben with the Five back in the day:

Memory lane CDs

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

I’m working on a personal project. I’m burning a bunch of CDs for someone. The deal is, one CD each to encapsulate my 80’s, 90’s, and after, musically. So I’ve been combing through my CDs trying to find the songs that have meant the most to me over the years.

I just started this, so I’m on the 80’s CD. When I was in college, I was just starting to discover the bolder side of me. My whole life, I had been the good girl. Good daughter, good student, responsible…extremely well brought up, and at the time, to my mind, extremely boring. By my sophomore year in college, I’d had enough of that. Foirtunately, Detroit at that time was a hotbed of music and had a great alterna-scene. I joined my college radio station, I started going to dive bars for shows, started taking pictures of local bands and some of the more well known acts that came to the city, and collected albums like a madwoman. (Of course, I’m editing the more salacious aspects of my self-discovery…)

Long story short, I’m having a hard time narrowing down the songs. I put one on, and then I find another. Then I’ll think of another. So far, this single 80’s CD I’m putting together has turned into two, and almost three. At this rate, he’ll be getting a box set.

Don’t put another dime in the jukebox

Saturday, July 12th, 2008

Jukeboxes are very important to the bar going experience. A bad one is just no fun. A drunken idiot who loads up the jukebox with sad songs is no fun, either. Play your break up music at home, for crying out loud. Also, people who load up a jukebox with quirky songs just to be funny should be banned from jukeboxes for life.

What would be playing in your perfect jukebox?

Here’s a few dollars worth from mine:

  1. “Story of My Life”/Social Distortion
  2. “I Will Dare”/The Replacements
  3. “Somerville”/Pernice Brothers
  4. “Midnight in Her Eyes”/Black Keys
  5. “Death or Glory”/The Clash
  6. “Murder or a Heart Attack”/Old 97’s
  7. “Waiting for the Sun”/The Jayhawks
  8. “Lie to Me”/Depeche Mode
  9. “She”/The Misfits
  10. “I Was a Kamikaze Pilot”/Hoodoo Gurus
  11. “Wined and Dined”/Syd Barrett
  12. “Oldest Story in the World”/The Plimsouls
  13. “The Passenger”/Iggy Pop
  14. “Long Way Around”/Dixie Chicks
  15. “In the Blood”/Better Than Ezra
  16. “Starlight”/Muse

And for a couple bucks more:

  1. “Meet Me at Mary’s Place”/Sam Cooke
  2. “Cigarettes and Coffee”/Otis Redding
  3. “A Lover’s Question”/Clyde McPhatter
  4. “Too Late to Turn Back Now”/Cornelius Bros. & Sister Rose
  5. “Come and Get Your Love”/Redbone
  6. “Soul Deep”/The Boxtops
  7. “Westbound #9″/Flaming Ember
  8. “Going to a Go-Go”/Smokey Robinson & The Miracles
  9. “Lonely Teardrops”/Jackie Wilson
  10. “Slip Away”/Clarence Carter
  11. “Gimme Little Sign”/Brenton Wood
  12. “Just My Imagination”/Temptations

I’m out of money now.

And Now A Word From Our Sponsors…

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

I did some thinking last night after watching our Georgia Force lose to the less talented (except last night) Cleveland Gladiators.  What I came to the conclusion of was: why can’t this town win a championship?  I’ve been here my whole life, I love this town and it pisses me off to NO end when we have SUCH talent and we just can’t seem to win it all.  Granted I understand there are other cities that have had a longer drought, but we’re not talking about them.  We’re talking about the A-T-L.

The Force lost last night 73-70 to the Gladiators in the divisional playoff round.

The Braves haven’t been to the World Series since winning it in 1995.  After 14 years in a row of winning the division, we haven’t been to the playoffs in 3.

The Falcons lost Super Bowl XXXIII to the Broncos 34-19 and haven’t been stellar since.  I know, I know, we won the NFC South in 2004.

The Thrashers make it to the playoffs for the first time in franchise history in the 05-06 season only to get swept by the NY Rangers.

Here’s the thing too, before all this happened with the Braves back in 1995, the first team to bring a championship back to Atlanta were the IFL Hockey team the Atlanta Knights.  They brought home the Turner Cup.

I don’t want you all to think I’m picking on our city, I’m not, I love this city and I love our sports.  I’m just tired of being the butt of sports jokes.  It’s like everyone LOVES to take a jab at Atlanta.  What’s even worse is when we’re called a fair weather city…DRIVES ME NUTS!

The point of this rant is to just say that I want to see this town do well and bring us home a well warranted championship.  So here’s what we need to do, we need to support the HELL out of this city.  I know the economy is garbage and we’ll all feeling the pinch, but sports are our release, so let’s release.

LOVE!

Man oh man. I am staying so super busy these days….
AT&T, Applebee’s, Peachtree Road Race, Loafing Leprechaun,Tuaca shots… you name it, I’m doing it. And I could not behappier with all the great events I get to do!

Question for you. Have you ever been to a restaurant and had a lousy experience? OF COURSE! Well, I was in Virginia Highland over the weekend and went to the lamest place ever! Dreadful average food and the four servers that were covering one, count em, ONE table were bust watching the Braves game instead of taking care of me!

And that’s what my world is all about!@!! Anyhoo. I was just supremely disappointed.

I think that in the year 2008, more than ever, you need to have good people working for you in order to be successful. And this is so evident in the restaraunt business because almost every single aspect of your business is on display to the customer at all times. I won’t mention the name of the place I am talking about, nor will I declare that I am “never going back there”. I will just simply say that I was underwhelmed.

And how about that 17 inning baseball game the other day. Wow. Not to mention the near 2-hour rain delay before the game even started. It was wicked fun though. Gregg from Tower Package in Buckhead was in the mix with Chris Jones at Eagle Rock Distributors who had a group in a suite for the game. It was so fun!! Thanks Gregg! I did leave in the 13th inning though.

Flag on the play.

That’s all I have.

Almost the 4th of July

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

Here it is. Almost the 4th of July. Is it me or is this year flying by faster than any other? It was as if New Years Eve was just yesterday!!

I am gonna be watching the Peachtree Road Race at my friend Brian’s place right on Peachtree. I love the Peachtree and this year I will be watching it from just below Peachtree Battle. Usually I watch it from south of Piedmont Hospital or at the intersections of 14th and Peachtree. Should be lots of fun.

It has been so busy for me lately I sometimes need help keeping up with everything. I load everything into my blackberry and hope that I make it to everything that I have committed to. Tonight I’m off to El Azteca in Alpharetta. Saturday I’m at an AT&T store in Lawrenceville for a few hours. Sunday I’m going to the Braves game with the managers group from Tower Package (we’re in the Budweiser suite! Yeah!). Busy, busy, busy.

Our big boss at work, Rick Caffey, keeps a nice big jar full of peanut M&M’s on his desk and I often go in there when he’s not in and take a few. I do this a lot. So this week I went and got three big bags from Kroger and replenished the supply. Sucking up? No. Just making restitution for stolen property.

I think My Morning Jacket is a wonderful band. Below is the video for their latest song, “I’m Amazed.” Currently one of my favorite songs on the station.

Check out their first few albums too, if you get the chance!

Crazy Diamond-repost

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

This is a repost of an entry I wrote (on my original dave-fm blog) when I heard Syd Barrett died. The anniversary of his death is coming up and for some reason it’s been top of mind for me. Put on Barrett in his memory and revel in the quirky talent.

11 July 2006

Well, that’s a sad way to wake up. I was reading the news with my first coffee of the day and I read that Pink Floyd founding member Syd Barrett died. I wasn’t quite awake yet, so I read it again, thinking my sleepy eyes were playing tricks on me. Nope. Sigh.

Syd Barrett is mostly famous now for being a crazy recluse. However, he was a founding member of Pink Floyd and had a wonderful, quirky ear. He suffered a psychotic breakdown in the late 60’s and gradually was phased out of Pink Floyd. He released some solo stuff in the early 70’s. It’s really worth seeking out. It’s not necessarily everyone’s musical cup of tea but it’s fascinating to hear how a damaged mind creates.

At various times since he and Pink Floyd parted ways, Syd Barrett was under-rated, over-rated, pursued, forgotten, lionized, pitied, and feared. He was mostly just a victim of his early success, his own mind, and the effect massive amounts of psychedelics had on his fragile hold on reality. A fascinating, sad study of a man. It’s unexpected twists of his mind, musically, that always kept me interested in Syd Barrett.

The early history of Pink Floyd is pretty interesting if you’d like to find out more about Syd Barrett. Also, very early Floyd and Syd Barrett’s solo work is good listen.

Added 7/14:

As I was driving up to Michigan, it gave me plenty of opportunities to think about things. On a particularly mind-numbing stretch of road in Indiana, my mind starting wandering. And suddenly I remembered something that happened to me that had to do with Syd Barrett. Even though it happened years ago, I’m surprised I didn’t remember when I was doing my on-air tribute. Anyway, here is the story…

After I graduated from high school, my grandparents took me to Europe with them. My grandfather is a professional photographer and he would go to Europe every year to photograph. It was always their intention to take every grandkid after he/she graduated from high school so a bit of the world would be opened up to him/her. Being the oldest grandkid (on my Mom’s side) I got to take the first trip. We went to Iceland, France, Italy, Greece, (then) Yugoslavia, Germany, and many other countries. It was an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience. I traveled the way my grandparents always did–by car, packing lunches, staying with friends or in hostels, taking the out of the way back roads, and getting to know the locals. I even milked a goat but that’s a story for another time…

In Iceland, we flew into Reykjavik and rented a car. We made our way up Iceland, to the northern city of Akureyri. Along the way, we stopped to stay in a hostel. I remember feeling a little blue, a little homesick, a little out of place in the sea of Nordic looking people and was sitting in a field outside the hostel listening to Syd Barrett’s “The Madcap Laughs” in my walkman. A guy about my age approached me and started to talk to me. He spoke Icelandic, and I didn’t. There was no way to communicate beyond smiles and gestures. Eventually, he motioned to my walkman as if to ask what I was listening to. I put the headphones on his ears. His face lit up with a big smile, he started nodding his head, and he said, “Ah. Syd Barrett.” …True story.
